Distinguished and Famous people from Albury
Albury has sent athletes and performers onto national and international stages. These biographies distinguish a local birthplace or upbringing from the places where a career subsequently developed.
🏅 Lauren Jackson
Lauren Jackson was born in Albury and attended Murray High School before joining the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Basketball ran in the family: both parents represented Australia. Her own career included three WNBA Most Valuable Player awards with Seattle and a world championship with the Opals in 2006. She also carried Australia's flag at the London Olympics in 2012. Her later appearances for the Albury Wodonga Bandits brought an international career back to local courts.
🎾 Margaret Court
Born Margaret Smith in Albury in 1942, Margaret Court became one of tennis's most successful competitors. She won her first Australian singles championship in 1960 and completed the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1970, taking all four major singles titles in the same year. Her 24 major singles championships were accompanied by extensive success in doubles and mixed doubles. Albury is her birthplace; the tournament record was built on courts around the world.
🎭 Richard Roxburgh
Richard Roxburgh was born in Albury and went on to study at the Australian National University and NIDA. His screen career has ranged from the television drama Blue Murder to the extravagant world of Moulin Rouge! He won an Australian Film Institute acting award for Doing Time for Patsy Cline and directed Romulus, My Father. That range has taken an Albury-born performer through very different kinds of Australian and international storytelling.
